Installation and admin login¶
Prepare installation¶
Check the system requirements, see System requirements.
Note
In companies, special network structures are often implemented, e.g. with subnets to divide PCs into different access areas. The BET must be located in the same access area as the PC. If necessary, consult the system administrator of the company network for installation.
Download the BET installation file from www.balluff.com.
Note
If you downloaded the file from a web browser or copied it from a share on another computer, the following message appears in the file properties:
*The file is from another computer. Access may have been blocked for security reasons.
Windows Defender checks whether the file is known and whether it has a valid signature. This security level must be allowed.
Right-click the BET installation file “Balluff Engineering Tool.exe” and select Properties.
Note
In order to be able to use BET with its full range of functions, driver packages are also installed. If these driver packages are not yet available on your computer, you will need administrator rights to complete the installation.
Warning
The installation causes the network adapter to restart.
During the installation process, Balluff Engineering Tool installs a network driver on your operating system. This driver installation may cause network connections to reset, potentially affecting other software applications running on your system. This can especially affect real-time applications such as soft PLC programs that rely on uninterrupted network connectivity.
Please note the following:
Possible network interruption: The installation of the network driver may temporarily interrupt your network connections. This may cause a temporary interruption of network-dependent tasks, including communication with external devices or systems.
Cautions: We recommend that you close all critical applications, especially real-time or mission-critical software, before proceeding with the installation. Save your work and make sure you are aware of all possible consequences.
Post-installation validation: After installation is complete, we recommend that you thoroughly test your network-dependent applications to ensure that they resume normal operation. If you encounter any problems, please contact our support team.
The following dialog appears:
Select the General tab and activate Allow.
Click Apply and close the dialog with OK.
BET install¶
Start the BET installation file with a double click.
The following dialog appears:
Read the information, select the Accept license agreement checkbox to accept the license agreement and click Next. If you wish to cancel the installation at this point, click Cancel.

Resetting the database when installing the BET is unavoidable if you install the BET in version 1.6x.x.
Click Next to reset your current database.
When the installation is completed successfully, the following dialog appears:
Click Next.

Click Exit.
The installation of BET is complete. The BET is installed under the following path: C:\Users\%UserName%\AppData\Local\. A BET shortcut is created on the desktop.
Silent installation of the BET¶
To perform a silent installation of BET via the command line, the following requirements must be met.
The installation program is run with administrator privileges.

Open any command line editor.
Enter the following command line (username = “example”):

Note
If you want to configure IO-Link devices via a USB master, you must install the corresponding drivers. This is currently not possible via a silent installation. In this case, install the BET via the installation file.
Generate administrator password¶
When you access the BET for the first time, you must generate an administrator password.
Start the BET from the shortcut placed on the desktop.
The following dialog appears:
For the operation of the BET it is necessary that you create an administrator account during the initial commissioning. This account can then be used to create further users with other roles. This account only has a meaning for the BET.
Note
You can use any characters from the ASCII character set and graphic characters from the Unicode character set for the password. A valid password has a maximum of 255 characters and a minimum of 12 characters by default. The minimum password length can be changed by users with the Admin role, but must not exceed the maximum password length of 255 characters. If you enter an invalid or insecure password, you will be notified. Such passwords will not be accepted.
Confirm with CREATE ACCOUNT.
You have created an administrator account.
Note
If the administrator password needs to be reset, contact Balluff support.
Log in as administrator¶
Click the button in the navigation bar to open the user management:

Click LOGIN.
The following dialog appears:
Enter the administrator name and password, and click LOGIN.
Note
If you have entered the login data incorrectly too many times, you will be blocked for a certain period of time and will not be able to log in again for the duration of this login block. By default, you have 10 possible failed attempts and the duration of the login lock is 30 seconds. The default values can be changed by users with the Admin role. The remaining duration of the lock is displayed.
You have successfully logged in to BET .
Log out as administrator¶
Open the user menu and click LOG OUT.
