First steps
SmartLight is a versatile signaling system designed for industrial automation applications. The Product combines visual and acoustic signaling and can be used to indicate machine status, process states, warnings, and alarms.
Thanks to its flexible operating modes and IO-Link connectivity, SmartLight can be adapted to a wide range of applications.
This section describes the first steps required to install, connect, and commission the Product. It also introduces the main functions to help you quickly get started and make full use of the available features.
Before you begin
Warning
Before initial operation, please read the Safety notes.
Notice
The Firmware of the SmartLight Family is continuously developed with new features and bug fixes. Multiple variants are part of this product family. The latest firmware, release notes, and additional files are always available on the Balluff Update Platform. Firmware can be easily updated through the integrated WebUI or the Balluff Engineering Tool.
Finding all neccesary information
Before connecting and commissioning the module, please read the safety instructions and guidelines in the manual. Always ensure that all necessary safety precautions are followed.
Mounting the module
The Product supports various mounting options. The most common mounting methods are described in this section
Flush Mount: For mounting the Product Flush on a Surface, a 20mm hole is recommended. Place the Rubber Washer at the designated nut on the Product and place the threaded Part in the hole. Lock the product with the included M18 Hex-Nut. Optionally a standard Mashine Washer can be placed or in heavy vibration areas a thread lock should be used. Fasten the M18 Hex nut with a torque of 8 Nm.
Stand Mount: For mounting the Product using a Stand Mount (e.g. BAM026K), first attach the Stand Mount securely to the machine frame or mounting surface according to the instructions supplied with the mounting accessory. Route the M12 cable through the Stand Mount and mount the Product according to accessory documentation. Ensure the Product is mounted vertically and that all mechanical connections are tightened securely. In applications with high vibration, suitable locking elements or thread locking compound are recommended.
Wall Mount: For wall mounting, first install the Wall Mount bracket securely on a flat surface using suitable mounting hardware. Ensure that the Product remains clearly visible from the intended viewing direction and that sufficient clearance is maintained around the Product. Tighten all mounting hardware securely and use suitable locking measures in applications subject to vibration.
Main steps for installing the module:
Prepare the substrate for installation
Position the module at the designated location
Fasten the module in place with the included M18 Hex Nut.
Tighten the Hex Nut to a maximum torque of 8 Nm
Connecting the module and starting up
When connecting the module, please follow the order described below. Always ensure that all cables are securely seated and that the plugs and cable connections are in good condition.
Main steps for connecting the module:
Plug in the unpowerded M12 Connector with cable and securely tighten the screw connection.
Then activate module power supply. The module status LED will start to light up.
Depending on the used connection, the status LED will indicate the state.
SmartLight automatically detects the used control mode during startup. If IO-Link communication is detected, the Product operates in IO-Link mode. Otherwise, the Product automatically enters SIO mode.
Upon initial power-up, Demo Mode is enabled by default. Demo Mode is automatically disabled after the next restart or when valid process data is received. The mode can be enabled again using the corresponding ISDU parameter.
Send Process Data and Start Using
To start using the Product, this section will provide some sample data which can be used to set up a basic signalling application and helps making the first steps more convenient.
There are two ways to start with the product in a convenient way.
Balluff Engineering Tool SmartLight Plugin
Webserver of any BNI Master Block.
Balluff Engineering Tool Configuration
The Balluff Engineering Tool (BET) includes a visual configurator for SmartLight. Create a new configuration, add a SmartLight to the project, and select Configurator to access it. The configurator can be used without a connected device, allowing configurations to be prepared offline and downloaded later.
Webserver Configuration
Connect the SmartLight to any Port on the BNI Master Block. This Example will use
Port 1of an IO-Link master.Ensure that the IO-Link master is powered and reachable via the network. Example IP address:
192.168.1.1.Open a web browser and log in to the web server of the IO-Link master.
Verify that the SmartLight is detected on Port 1.
If the device is not displayed correctly, upload the corresponding IODD using the IODD Finder or import the IODD manually.
After successful device identification, open the Process Data page.
Configure the process data according to the example below.
Apply the settings and verify that the SmartLight responds as expected.
